Question 1

Are sterile compresses reimbursed without a prescription?

Accepted Answer

No. Health Insurance reimbursement only occurs upon a medical prescription. A spontaneous over-the-counter purchase without a prescription is not covered, even if the product is otherwise listed on the LPPR (List of reimbursable products and services).

Question 2

What is the reimbursement rate for a sterile compress?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the type, size, and packaging. For a sterile non-woven compress of 56 to 100 cm², the maximum selling price dropped from €3.25 to €3.07 on November 15, 2025, and will drop to €2.98 on November 15, 2026.

Question 3

Are non-sterile compresses also reimbursed?

Accepted Answer

Yes, they are also listed in the LPP (List of reimbursable products and services) and are reimbursable on prescription. The French National Authority for Health (HAS) even recommends them for cleaning most wounds, reserving sterile compresses for burns and cleaning healthy skin.

Question 4

How to check if a compress is listed on the LPP?

Accepted Answer

You can consult the LPP database on ameli.fr, either by code or by name. The easiest way remains to ask the pharmacist, who knows if a reference is listed and at what rate it is reimbursed.

Question 5

Why is the price of compresses dropping?

Accepted Answer

The Economic Committee for Health Products (CEPS) has initiated a downward revision of the prices of generic sterile dressings, as part of healthcare expenditure control, with an average decrease of 14,4 % spread over 2025 and 2026.
